Thank you for coming to see this new work! The winter images…all except “Pennsylvania Morning”… were done, or at least photographed, within a few steps of our studio…either from the studio looking west, or from the kitchen door, looking south down along Fino’s Run. The winter just past was a long one, and there was time to really look and see how a familiar landscape was transformed by snow, and to see how the face of the landscape changed as the sun moved across it during the short days. “Pennsylvania Morning” was done from a photograph I took on East Mountain…but it became “distilled” during the painting process, and really it could be anywhere in the neighborhoods where I used to live.
I always intended to include some spring images—“after winter”—and by the beginning of March it was a relief to start in on spring, even though we were still under snow and would be for the rest of the month. My subjects were the flowers that Renée and I plant every fall, and photograph in the spring. A good resource to have for an occasion like this show, which needed some spring color after the gray and blue and umber of a very long winter.
