Where’s the Inspiration?

original acrylic painting. Gardner Road, by Renee Emanuel copyright 2014
Evening, Gardner Road

There are so many things about this journey that have been fun, and seemingly meant to be. There are many stories to share, and I will. But they won’t be in the order they occurred, since I’d only be writing about then, and it’s NOW. In the now, so many ideas are clamoring to be expressed that it feels like being at a fine buffet and not knowing what to choose. Today after a great class at our studio in Moscow, one of our students said, “you have a very special kind of light here.” And we do…the photos looking down towards our bluff give you a taste of the light in Moscow, in this place we love so well.Towards the Bluff, Evening

And Maine has that special “je ne sais quoi” as well. The feeling of the early light streaming through the kitchen window has great magic and I’ve tried to catch that in this painting. The setting sun on the other side of the house is amazing as well. I’ve concentrated on setting up still life in the kitchen, but have so many ideas for other rooms in the house. It was great catching Pongo our cat leaving the kitchen for his daily exploration.

Mark Twain, a favorite author of mine, described his family’s love for the home they built in Hartford Connecticut. He said that the house “was of us, and we were in its confidence and lived in its grace and in the peace of its benediction.” Often, as we walk around our garden here, or sit relaxing with a drink after we’ve brought the life back into a badly neglected room in Maine, we feel exactly the same way.

This post from last year seems particularly relevant. Again this year, we’re deep in snow here at home in Moscow. Everything seems a production…walking the dog, bringing in wood, getting groceries. Boots and layers of clothing are necessary for a trip outside. We feel like […]

For many years, Bill and I have painted plein-air landscapes. We were on our way to paint in Nova Scotia, when a former teacher and friend invited us to stop by and paint the incredible landscape of Midcoast Maine, where she, the Wyeths and so […]
